Teaching English For Academic Purposes

This course will cover some or all of the following aspects:

  • Approaches and methods in teaching EAP
  • Discourse and genre analysis
  • Dealing with content in the EAP classroom
  • Materials evaluation
  • Materials design
  • Teaching study skills
  • Cross-cultural and intercultural dimensions in EAP classrooms
  • Placement, diagnostic, progress and achievement testing in EAP contexts
  • EAP course design, including syllabus design, staffing, timetabling and resourcing

This course will extend the participant’s understanding and critical awareness of:

  • Current approaches and methods in teaching English for Academic Purposes
  • The key discourse and genre analysis skills needed for the purposes of materials design
  • How to review and evaluate a range of published EAP materials
  • How to design appropriate materials for students of a variety of subjects
  • The key principles in EAP course design
  • The cross-cultural and intercultural issues in EAP
  • The requirements of IELTS and other matriculation-oriented language tests and examinations
